Character, story, style… All coming from you!

The On-Camera Scene Study Lab, led by BGB Master Teacher, Sydney Walsh is the place to boldly physicalize your work, take risks, dive deep into finding your most meaningful, personal connection to character and story, and achieve presence, truth, and power through practice every week on camera. This practice gives voice and a structure to the unseen creative process (that we mine!), making this specific, deep, interpretive work possible, helping you book work, make work, and keep working.

As actors, we are Explorers not Performers.

In The Scene Study Lab we are dedicated explorers. Exploring the world, the characters, the action, the relationships, and the stakes of our material from our IMAGINATIONS. And we don't need to wait for anyone or anything to give us permission to make our way, to create our take on the material, to use our imagination. Here there is no brand or wheelhouse to live up to, no hoop to jump through, no need to “perform.” We only ask that you bring yourself and your IMAGINATION to the work.

Because Imagination is our JOB.

When we work on set or on an audition, when we make a self-tape, we want to be in the process of ACTIVE IMAGINATION. And our job is not TO PERFORM or TO PLEASE anybody. Our job is to explore, play, discover, and listen with our entire beings in real time… to OFFER our take on the scene from our imagined and our authentic sense of the material. To change and affect our partners and to “LIVE truthfully under imaginary circumstances” and in the moment.

There is no one like you and there never will be… you are an individual force of nature.
In our weekly lab you bring yourself to the scene, the character, and the process of making your work… every single time. They (whomever is watching) are waiting for YOU. Bring yourself and where you are right now in real time, every time… Who else would you bring?

YOU are the source. So let’s go.

Sydney’s gifts as a teacher draw on her extensive experience working on stage, in front of the camera, and as a director. It is her joy and mission to share the tools and insights she’s gained over many years in order to train, prepare, and direct you in the service of practicing your craft, boldly interpreting material from your unique perspective and experience, and creating a safe and wonderfully challenging container for the work. With these tools, you can do anything!

The Work...

In The Scene Study Lab we PLAY, we Make it PERSONAL... AND we remember that this character is YOU plus the CIRCUMSTANCES. When you are deep in your creative process, everything you work on will make you better as an actor, and will  help you to go deeper to a more enriched experience of playing… to a more attuned place of being PRESENT.

Each month, you dive into a variety of sources, sometimes assigned and sometimes chosen by you. You work with material from plays, films, and television scripts, all genres and worlds, and go in deep.

  1. Dive deep into circumstances, character, physical life, and an ever evolving relationship to your chosen material or script — the preparation work every actor needs to know.
  2. Use cold reading, improvisational and imaginative sensory tools to tap into the voice of YOU (inside the character) so that your choices serve their story, and are also deeply personal to you.
  3. Invest in PRACTICE as your secret weapon, using the PROCESS WORK from our weekly work together to consistently form the bones of your performance so you can…
  4. Deepen and find new freedom in your self-tape and on-camera work. Show up to the weekly practice of organic script analysis, making bold choices in real time, deeply listening, and tapping your impulsive flow to create and inhabit dynamic living characters with a unique point of view will enliven your recorded scenes, self-tapes and all auditions, and your connection to your artistry.

"I LOVE Sydney’s class. It is the best acting class I have ever taken. From the first day it has completely changed the way I approached my craft. I’m SO HAPPY I found Sydney and The BGB Studio."

- Melanie Camp, THE SANDRA WEST DIARIES

"Sydney inspires actors by focusing in on what they have to bring to the material and freeing them up to make creative choices. She has razor focus and insight, a dedication and energy that will not cease until the actor and script are one. She creates an environment of generosity where people are inspired to play specific objectives and remain vulnerable; where there is trust and a sense of play. A television actor, an acting teacher, a developer of original material and a theatre director, she brings joy, wisdom, humility and humor to her art and to her fellow actors."

- Sally Smythe, Artistic Director, SOUTH PASADENA THEATER WORKSHOP

"Sydney Walsh is a dear friend and longtime collaborator. She is my sister in art and poetry. She has a gift for organizing the circle of the feast; welcoming newcomers to the banquet, getting old timers, like me, to eat and drink heartily, as if for the first time. She invites everyone within her circle to serve each other as a way of serving themselves. She is a hard working, ever curious and dedicated teacher, not to mention a fine, accomplished actress herself. One is lucky to be around her experience; one of strength and hope."

- Bernard White, KIDDING

"Sydney Walsh’s ability as a teacher to inspire is profound. Over the years she has lovingly pushed me to go deeper as an actor, writer, and director. She supports what is unique and special in each of her students and encourages them to fiercely bring those qualities into their work. Because of her many years as a working actor, she knows what you must bravely call forth from inside when auditioning and on set. Sydney imparts knowledge that will empower you in this business. Take her class, and I promise, you’ll feel galvanized!"

- Jackie Katzman, Creator/Exec Producer, STONE (PARAMOUNT TV)

"I’m so grateful to Sydney for inspiring me with her incredible belief and spirit. She’s dedicated, generous, and full of creativity in her ideas of where a scene and character can go. Thank you, Syd, for being the warmest of teachers. You’ve been a collaborator, a mentor, and above all, a true friend."

- Jessika Van, AWKWARD

"I’ve studied with a few coaches and teachers over the past few years, and I can honestly say that Sydney is for sure one of the best. Sydney is real, authentic, and so compassionate about ensuring her students push themselves and bring out the best they can offer."

- Kieran Roberts, UP COUNTRY

Being in class and community with @sydsource and my classmates is, hands down, the best part of my week. I'm off of class this month and miss it...can't wait to be back! But if anyone out there reading this is on the fence about BGB, I urge you to give it a try. It's changed everything for me. Being able to connect and respond as a human to another human in real-time, whether in person or on Zoom is everything. It's fulfilling and restorative, and coming off of isolation, it's the antidote to stagnation and fear. For me, being in class at BGB is an act of radical self-love. Sydney's the real deal and I always find something new as an actor and human under her guidance. ❤
