Stay In Championship Shape

The Monday Night Workout explores your boundaries, sharpens your artistic voice, and gets you in the kind of championship shape required to be successful.

Cate Cohen’s Monday Night Workout pushes back against patriarchal limitations in the work and challenges power structures, artistic or otherwise. Her sharp intuition and deep understanding of an actor’s instrument nurtures the kind of transformational growth needed to be successful.

This is the class for our time.

Each week Cate guides you to own your power, define your own career, bring all of yourself to your work, and never stop growing. Cate brings her real-world experience as a working actor and her deep love of the work to each class, challenging each actor to dig deeper and be better. Cate creates the space for you to support and lift each other up, creating an environment where, week after week, your class community will grow and thrive together.

The work...

Working with repetition exercises, cold reading, scene work from various genres, original and on-camera work, Cate guides you to your personal power and truthful human connection. She teaches you how to make deeply specific and unique choices so that you can approach your craft and career with strength and leadership. Nothing is off limits in this dynamic class.

In Cate’s own words…  “My goal is to bring a sense of play and joy to the work.  I’m passionate about helping actors discover (or rediscover) the freedom and ease in their approach to the work. To get back to the simple childlike wonder in playing pretend.  Whether someone is new to acting or a seasoned veteran, approaching the work like this – with a curiosity and a willingness to “make mistakes” and to reveal ourselves (with all our perceived faults and imperfections) – is the key to portraying characters realistically and to creating a satisfying/fulfilling career.

I am interested in helping actors shed whatever it is that is holding them back (perfectionism, a need to please, doubts and fears) so that they may be free and bold in their acting choices.  And so that they may become leaders in the industry.”

"Since I’ve been taking Cate’s class I have seen tremendous growth in my approach to the work. She creates a place where I feel completely safe to play, allowing me the freedom to come to class with every part of me and just simply ‘BE.’ As a result, I approach my work not trying to impress onlookers by making the “right” choices but simply to affect my scene partner. I’m deeply grateful to Cate and The BGB Studio for cultivating an environment conducive to artistic growth."

- Terrell Martin, CATCH

"Because of Cate, I know I have found a home at BGB to play in the work. A space built on trust, on presence, on acceptance of the moment, to share and get feedback, to fail and laugh, to build my art on my own terms."

- Rebecca Gomberg, THE WEST AND THE RUTHLESS

"Cate’s class has changed my life. With such gentleness and kindness, she is killing the people pleaser in me and pushing me to be a leader in my craft. By no longer looking to others for validation, but rather finding happiness and fun in the work, I have experienced the freedom to create. I now have ownership in knowing where and how I want to really grow. As a result, my work has improved more in her class than the past decade of classes; and newfound confidence is now spilling into other areas of my life. I am forever thankful for Cate."

- Blaine Saunders, THE MIDDLE

"Working with Cate gives you the license to make bold choices in a scene, and the safe environment to play, make mistakes, and figure out what works for you. I felt instantly empowered to experiment and have fun in my work. Additionally, watching my fellow actors grow in her class was almost as beneficial as getting to do the work myself. Cate is strong and kind–everything I want in an ongoing teacher."

- Anne Fidler, LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT

"The gift that Cate gives me every week is a safe space for me to explore and ‘be present’ in my work. It is exciting and refreshing to study with someone who is not only a working actress, but is also in class. Cate’s honesty about her struggles and success is very freeing, and creates that safety. Her insight into how to “play” with a scene helps me to break old patterns and gain new awareness about myself and my instrument. Even more than ‘teaching’, Cate facilitates my growth and flexibility as I do “the work.” Now when I go to auditions and do workshops with casting directors, I feel free to play without worrying about how I’m doing. So fun!"

- Mary Kathleen Gordon, THE REAL O'NEALS
